Timbwani

Timbwani village is on the South Coast of Mombasa- Kenya. Its not a tourist area, village people are very poor, only a few work and there is no local tourist trade. In the Likoni clashes in 1997 many local people were murdered - homes were destroyed, villagers lost their small businesses and this area has never recovered.

Up to January 2000 a little wooden hut had been used as a nursery for 40 children.

We do not want these children to disappear into an orphanage, from where many die, or end up on the streets begging. Drugs and prostitution are major problems.

Achievements

By 2002 we built NINE classrooms, five toilets & borehole.

Since 2003 a head teacher's office, staff room and work/library, and water tanks plus more toilets have been built.

2006 - A further classroom is under construction.

Many local villagers are helped with small businesses, and families are supported with purchases of goats and chickens.

More than 80 street children are being educated free of charge, and there is a free baby class for children aged 3-4 years.

Most children are provided with uniforms, shoes, school bag, pencils and text books.

Football teams have been set up, with football kit, shoes (and footballs!) to help keep them off the streets.

Orphans and families are supported monthly with food and housing, and there is help for many families with medicine and essential items.

An eight-room house has been built in Timbwani for underprivileged children and families. Four-roomed houses were built after a fire in 2003, and all families helped with essentials beds, cooking equipment, etc

Another seven-roomed house was completed in January 2004, and many other rooms repaired.

Mosquito nets have been bought for children at both schools, prevention of malaria is better than cure.

One teacher has been supported to attend Teacher Training College for three years, and two nursery teachers attending Nursery College for three years.

A village borehole has been dug, and fitted with pump and tanks to provide fresh water.

Future Plans

Future plans include providing more safe, dry housing for these children and their families.

We are a grass roots and hand-on organisation, which ensures that all sponsors and donors can be involved as much as they want. We provide exactly what is needed and requested by the Kenyan villagers, and not what other charities think they need.
